Call from the Pope was not a prank

Hang up on Pope Francis and you might get a hug.

Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano says Pope Francis dialled an ailing Italian man to comfort him. The Pontiff has a habit of calling people who he has heard are suffering and saying: “Hello, I’m Pope Francis,” when they answer their phone.

The newspaper said the man, Franco Rabuffi, hung up twice, thinking it was a prankster.

On the third call, he realised it truly was the Pope and was speechless. The paper says Pope Francis told Rabuffi he was amused.

Rabuffi and his wife were invited to the Pope’s public audience last Wednesday in St Peter’s Square, where head of the Catholic Church hugged them and assured them he really did dial the man’s phone.

Murder charge after fake eulogy

Police in South Africa say a man has been charged with his wife’s murder, days after local media reported that the heartfelt eulogy he delivered at her funeral was plagiarised.

Police spokeswoman Marinda Mills said that Christopher Panayiotou appeared in court in Port Elizabeth. Mills said Panayiotou was arrested last week, following the arrest of another man also accused of the murder. A third man was also arrested.

Police said schoolteacher Jayde Panayiotou, 28, was abducted in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth on April 21. She was shot to death.

A local news site, News24, reported that parts of the moving eulogy Christopher Panayiotou read at his wife’s funeral were cut and pasted from a tribute seen online and written by another man.
