Cherry growers predict a record crop for the second year running, the Daily Mail has reported.

Owing to the sunny weather, they expect to reap 4,500 tonnes, 500 tonnes up on last year's record total.

British Cherries said temperatures of around 25˚C are ideal to ensure the abundant blossom is 'set' successfully, leading to a big harvest.

All-girl quintuplets born in Texas

A woman has delivered five girls in what is believed to be the first set of all-female quintuplets born in the United States, a hospital in Texas said.

The Woman’s Hospital of Texas in Houston said Danielle Busby had her babies by caesarean section on April 8. Doctors said the girls, born prematurely at 28 weeks, were doing well.

Busby, her husband Adam and her eldest daughter, Blayke, welcomed Olivia Marie, Ava Lane, Hazel Grace, Parker Kate and Riley Paige. Their birth weights ranged from 2lb to 2lb 6oz.

Thief leaves fingerprints on bottle

Police say a suspect in a Pennsylvania liquor store stick up tripped himself up by leaving fingerprints on a whiskey bottle before pulling a gun and telling a cashier he was robbing the place to help his kids.

Pedro Ewing is charged with robbery, retail theft and other offences in the April 3 hold-up at a state-owned store in Wilkes Barre Township. Authorities say the 42-year-old Pittsburgh man is also wanted in Los Angeles.

Police say Ewing left his booze clues when he put a $32 fifth of Gentleman Jack whiskey back on a shelf, swiping a $60 half-gallon bottle instead. Police say Ewing pulled a gun on the clerk and got away with $82 cash.

Hewitt is also charged with brandishing a firearm and being a felon in possession of a weapon. He was convicted of robbing the same Richmond Heights bank of $163,000 in 1999 with an accomplice.

Chimp bashes drone out of the sky

A drone sent into the chimpanzee enclosure of a Dutch zoo was bashed out of the sky by one of its inhabitants.

Twenty-three-year-old female chimp Tushi waited in a tree at the Royal Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem when the unfamiliar intruder flew in. She sent it crashing to the ground with two whacks from a long branch.

Zoo spokesman Bas Lukkenaar said: “We can write the drone off. It cost about €2,000. Then again, it doesn't surprise us that Tushi did this. She is very handy with sticks.”

Arrow pierces Egyptian goose’s neck

An Egyptian goose that lived for at least a week with an arrow piercing its neck as it evaded capture by animal control workers in Southern California died after it was wrangled and taken to surgery.

The goose at first appeared to make it successfully through the operation at a bird and wildlife clinic on Wednesday but then died a short time later, said Katie Ingram of Orange County Animal Care.

Animal officials had high hopes for the bird’s recovery after its capture earlier on Wednesday because it seemed in otherwise good health and the arrow had missed all its vital organs.

She said the animal was shot intentionally at least a week ago. Animal control officers started getting calls on April 5 about the bird and found it after a call from Hole 5 at the Anaheim Hills Golf Course on April 8.
