Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was in a critical condition in hospital yesterday after a hip replacement operation.

The 93-year-old actress, who had her right hip replaced after a fall at her Bel-Air home, was in a critical condition.

Gabor's husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, said his wife had injuries to the right side of her body, including a broken hip, after she fell out of her bed last weekend trying to get into a wheelchair at her Bel-Air home.

Gabor initially appeared to be recovering after the hip surgery last Monday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre in Los Angeles, Gabor's publicist John Blanchette said.

He said on Friday night that the actress may have suffered a stroke during surgery, but Mr von Anhalt said doctors had not confirmed that. (PA)

Damages awarded to Bookseller of Kabul wife

The author and publisher of bestselling The Bookseller of Kabul have been ordered to pay 250,000 kroner (£26,000) in damages to a woman portrayed in the book.

The Daily Dagbladet newspaper said yesterday the Oslo district court ruled journalist Asne Seierstad infringed the privacy of Suraia Rais in her book, named after Rais's husband, Shah Mohammad Rais.

Seierstad lived with the Rais family in Kabul in 2002 and published the book, about their personal relationships and feelings, shortly afterwards.

The court ruled Seierstad did not act in good faith to ensure the account of Rais's feelings was accurate and "Rais was not the source of the information". (PA)

Sacked McChrystal retires from military

The general sacked by US President Barack Obama as Afghanistan's coalition commander ended his 34-year army career in a retirement ceremony at his Washington military headquarters.

He inspired intense loyalty among many of those who served under him as International Security Assistance Force chief in Afghanistan, but was sacked last month after Rolling Stone magazine published an article quoting scathing remarks he and his aides made about their civilian bosses. (PA)

Putin roars in on a Harley Davidson

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin leapt on a Harley Davidson and roared into an international biker convention.

Around 5,000 bikers from Europe and beyond gathered in Sevastopol for the annual festival on Ukraine's Crimea peninsula.

Putin, in Ukraine for talks with the country's new Russia-friendly leadership, had his black shirt sleeves rolled up as he motored toward a stage along a dusty road on the three-wheeled bike.

In sunglasses, black jeans and black fingerless gloves, the Russian prime minister clearly revelled in the moment, smiling and waving to the enthusiastic crowd.

From a podium, he described the motorbike as "the most democratic form of transport" and praised the bikers' free spirit. He also urged them to unite in promoting safe driving. (PA)

Space tourism rocket to fly free in test

Virgin Galactic's space tourism rocket Spaceship Two may fly free in its first glide test later this year, the company said.

The six-passenger spaceship has been carried aloft three times attached to the wing of its special jet-powered mothership, including a July 15 flight with two pilots aboard for the first time.

That flight, conducted by spaceship-builder Scaled Composites over California's Mojave Desert, allowed the crew to evaluate all systems and functions in the air, said Stephen Attenborough, an executive with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic in London. (PA)

He will be moved to Marseille where he should "rest for two or three days," the official added.
