Twenty-two Albanian opposition Socialist MPs and 180 supporters have launched a hunger strike to press the government to allow a partial recount of an election they claim was tainted by vote-rigging.

Tens of thousands of Socialist supporters, led by Tirana mayor Edi Rama, held a protest earlier, pressing for a recount.

The government of prime minister Sali Berisha, who narrowly won the June 28 general election, controlling 75 of parliament's 140 seats, has called that demand illegal.

US Embassy warns terror attacks planned in India

The US Embassy said terrorists were planning "imminent attacks" in India's capital and has warned Americans there to be vigilant.

Yesterday's alert adding the word 'imminent', which appeared more urgent than an embassy advisory last month that cited increased indications of attacks in New Delhi.

The embassy noted that markets and other areas frequented by Westerners in New Delhi had been targeted in past attacks.

The alert said Americans in India should maintain 'a high level of vigilance', remain aware of their surroundings and watch out for unattended packages.

Jacko lawyer suicide

A successful entertainment lawyer who once represented Michael Jackson and opera singer Andrea Bocelli was found dead in an apparent suicide.

Peter Lopez, 60, died of a gunshot wound at his home in California, coroner's office operations chief Craig Harvey said.

Mr Lopez, married to TV's Dukes of Hazzard actress Catherine Bach, worked with artists, record producers and songwriters, and was a co-producer of the Jennifer Lopez film Selena.

Batman sequel in July 2012

A sequel to The Dark Knight will swoop into cinemas in 2012.

Warner Bros has scheduled July 20 as the release date for the next instalment of the Batman film franchise.

Director Christopher Nolan brought the caped crusader back to the big screen in 2005's Batman Begins and 2008's The Dark Knight, which earned over one billion dollars worldwide and earned Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker.

Taiwan executions

Taiwan has executed four prisoners, the first time it has carried out the death sentence since December 2005.

The Ministry of Justice said the executions were carried out after justice minister Tseng Yung-fu signed warrants for the executions.

The ministry said the four men were executed for "grave offences such as fatal kidnappings and murders" and that their sentences had been confirmed by court authorities at various levels.

Aretha festival blow

Soul legend Aretha Franklin has cancelled her appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, but organisers and fans got lucky with a replacement.

Earth, Wind and Fire happened to be in the area and offered to play on the popular music festival's largest stage.

Festival spokesman Louis Edwards said the 'Queen of Soul' told organisers last Thursday she would not be able to perform. He said she apologised to fans but would not give a reason why.

O.J. Simpson suit becomes artefact

The suit that American football star and actor OJ Simpson wore on the day he was acquitted of murder charges has been delivered to the Newseum in Washington DC, where it will be part of a display focusing on the trial.

Simpson's former manager, Mike Gilbert, had the suit in storage for nearly 15 years.

Newseum staff hope to have it ready for display by October, which will mark the 15th anniversary of Simpson's acquittal in the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Deadly tornadoes tear through state

Tornadoes ripping through central Arkansas have killed at least three people, injured 25 others and destroyed several homes, authorities said yesterday.

State Department of Emergency management spokeswoman Renee Preslar said teams were searching for people who may be trapped in a damaged home in Center Ridge, north of Little Rock.

She said three people were killed and three homes destroyed in nearby Van Buren County.

Arkansas State Police said tornado sightings had been reported just north in Culpepper and a sheriff's dispatcher said a sighting was also reported in the Oakland area, near the Missouri border.

Trees and power lines were down along interstates in both areas.
