Survives 80-foot cliff fall

A woman is in stable condition after miraculously surviving an 80ft fall from the top of a cliff, mountain rescue said yesterday.

Mountain rescue teams and a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter worked to rescue the woman, after she fell from the cliff face at Cheddar Gorge in Somerset.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue said the woman in her thirties was taken to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol and is in a stable condition.

A climber in the area was first to reach her and gave her first aid, he said.

She was moved into a safe position until firefighters from Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service arrived.

A helicopter from RAF Chivenor in Devon was used to remove her from the gorge.

Glastonbury tickets go on sale

Tickets for next year’s Glastonbury music festival went on sale yesterday.

Next year is the 40th anniversary of the event, which is held at Worth Farm in Somerset.

This year’s festival attracted 137,000 music fans and featured acts like Blur, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. It was hailed as one of the best by festival-goers and organisers alike.

Co-organiser Michael Eavis said of the 2010 event: “The expectations are really high.

“We’re trying to get the best headliners in the world.”

The festival takes place between June 23 and June 27.

Full weekend tickets cost £185 - up £10 from last year - plus a £5 booking fee.

The registration system, which does not guarantee a ticket, was introduced in 2007 to combat touting.

Last year fans were able to extend their registration for three years.

Anyone unsure whether their previous registration is still valid can check online.

Buzz lightyear gets warm welcome

Cartoon movie star Buzz Lightyear received a rocket hero’s welcome home from the man after whom he is named.

The 12-inch action figure star of the Toy Story films returned last month from a real 15-month space station mission, and took part in a parade at Walt Disney World in Florida last Friday.

Leading the parade was “the real Buzz” - Apollo 11’s Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon. Mr Aldrin rode on top of a 1969 Camaro convertible, followed by former space station commander Mike Fincke in another convertible, and then came Buzz Lightyear in a small, remote-controlled Toy Story movie-type car.

MP crashes car while using mobile

UK Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman was facing a police probe yesterday after she was involved in a traffic collision while allegedly using her mobile phone.

The crash happened in Dulwich, south-east London on July 3.

Witnesses told the Mail on Sunday that the MP for Camberwell and Peckham stopped briefly to speak after the crash but drove off without leaving her insurance or registration details. She is said to have struck a parked car, ending a mobile phone conversation.

Ms Harman, who is Leader of the House of Commons, denies any wrongdoing.

Absentee call causes chaos

A student absence phone call that went to every family of students at a West Tennessee middle school caused an uproar.

The automated call is set to go out at 9 a.m. each day from Martin Middle School, but only to families whose children have been marked absent that day. Instead last week it went to parents of all 475 students at the school.
