Work is about to start on a 35m extension to the North quay of Terminal II of Malta Freeport, Transport Malta advised this afternoon. The works will continue throughout the year.

The works include the driving of piles into the seabed and placing of concrete blocks.

Mariners were advised to give the area a wide berth.

Last month, Economic Affairs Minister Chris Cardona said Malta Freeport was exploring the possibility of further expansion and it was in discussions with the government about a pocket of land close to the Freeport site in Birzebbuga. Most of the land belongs to the government.
