Updated 11.40am - Activity at Malta Freeport was brought to a halt in many sections last night as workers walked out in protest over scheduled annual pay rises.

Some workers said the emoluments had not reached the level they were told they would reach in terms of the collective agreement.

The stoppage was not ordered by the GWU, which represents the workers, but a meeting between the union and the management is being held today. The union said it would continue to safeguard the workers' interests.

The stoppage continued this morning.
