A public service employee working with the elderly is being charged before the Public Service Commission with abusing his position of trust and may be dismissed from employment, Family Minister Michael Farrugia said this morning.

Answering a number of questions by Opposition MPs Jason Azzopardi, Paula Mifsud Bonnici and Claudette Buttigieg, the minister said cases of abuse of elderly people at St Vincent de Paul Residence (SVPR) were being investigated, as needed.

In an entity as large as SVPR, such incidents were bound to happen. However he never held back from ordering inquiries and referring cases to the police.

Dr Farrugia explained what the government had done to safeguard the elderly, arguing that legislation introduced in this legislature proved this. He explained the gravity of situations in which an elderly person would be abused by someone with responsibility, a person of trust.

Turning to a case of an elderly person who died at SVPR and was buried without his family being told, Dr Farrugia said that all procedures were followed and the police were asked to investigate.
