Work on the restoration of the Citadel in Victoria is now underway after administrative issues caused a delay, EU funds Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg said this morning.

Addressing a news conference, he said the Malta Environment and Planning Authority gave the green light to the outline application in October 2011.

But teething problems that could have been addressed more efficiently by the previous administration were hindering the project's implementation, Dr Borg said.

Dr Borg said that €12 million from EU funds was being allocated for the project, which envisaged the implementation of the key points identified in the Citadel Masterplan (a policy document for the protection and management of this site).

The document fproposes the creation of a visitors’ centre, the restoration of principal public buildings and the rehabilitation of public spaces and related infrastructural works within the Citadel area.
