SLIEMA WANDERERS-1, QORMI-0

Ivan Woods was Sliema Wanderers' hero as the veteran striker grabbed a last-minute winner to send the Blues through to the final of the U*Bet FA Trophy.

With the score locked at 0-0 and only stoppage time left, the game looked to be heading towards extra-time but Wood averted that to send the Sliema fans into raptures.

It was a cruel blow for Qormi who, minutes earlier, had hit a post after showing the better ideas throughout.

Qormi were slightly the better side in a drab first half.

The first chance was created by Sliema as winger Trevor Cilia cut inside Triston Caruana but his low effort was blocked by Matthew Farrugia, the Qormi goalkeeper.

Scoring chances were few and far between with Qormi showing the better ideas up front.

Nigerian striker Alfred Effiong had a low shot blocked by Glenn Zammit, the Sliema goalkeeper.

Four minutes from half-time, Jorginho's free-kick was tamed by Zammit.

On another occasion, Jorginho slipped in a low cross-shot from the left but the ball just eluded Effiong.

Seven minutes into the second half, Effiong, running on to Emerson Vella's pass, sped into the box from the left but his cross found no takers.

The Blues were linking up better in attack. Cilia directed a pass to Vladavic but the latter's cross was headed clear.

On the hour, Sliema's Alex Muscat waltzed his way into the box but his grounder was stopped by Farrugia.

Qormi should have scored when Gabriel's fine pass set up Jorginho but the Brazilian was thwarted by Zammit. Effiong, using his speed to unsettle the Sliema defence, veered infield from the left before passing to Grech whose attempt was warded off by Muscat.

Ten minutes from time, Qormi were unlucky not to score as Jorginho's free-kick crashed against the far post.

With extra-time looming, Sliema struck. It was a prolonged move as John Mintoff crossed into the box, Jacob Borg, on for Trevor Cilia, sent in a low cross into the goalmouth where Woods' first effort was pushed away by Farrugia but the loose ball cannoned off the Sliema striker and into the net.

Sliema almost made it 2-0 when Vladavic drifted into the box only to shoot wide.
