The Malta Confederation of Women's Organisations (MCWO) said it was unfortunate that in the 21st century debate on the role of women in society was still ensuing.

"As seen from the divergent rhetoric emanating from the recent media reportage covering Women's Day, extensive debate on this impasse will remain constant and inconclusive if constraints are not addressed," the confederation said in a statement.

The MCWO called on the minister responsible for gender equality to "resolve and challenge the mind-set of those who, through fear of a culture change, believe a woman's place is in the home", and blamed the "mental deadlock" for lack of economic growth.

It said a shift in mentality could well be achieved if the Commission for the Promotion of Equality introduced a "well planned strategy aimed at the public via the media by informing it of the benefits of a more equal society."

School children also need to be targeted to challenge gender stereotypes from a young age, the MCWO said.

The confederation said the low participation of women in the workforce and in politics had to be explained and addressed, in order for "this lacuna" to be closed.
