NCW warmly congratulates the women athletes who formed part of the Maltese contingent of the 10th edition of the Games of the Small States of Europe for their outstanding performance.

Although no women formed part of the organising committee for the GSSE 2003, Marie Therese Zammit and Laurie Pace, directors in the Malta Olympic Committee, were both assistant chefs de mission with the Malta team whereas Sue Fenech headed the 50 hosts and hostesses provided for the VIPs.

Fifty-eight female athletes formed part of the Maltese contingent of 144 athletes, including 12 basketball and 12 volleyball players, with the successful tally of 23 medals (six of which were gold) out of the 44 won during these games.

The GSSE should not be a one-off event. Rather it should serve as an incentive to ensure that measures are taken to provide better and more accessible opportunities for the participation of women in sports at all levels.
