A woman who spent months living in fear of an obsessive stalker can finally walk to work without looking over her shoulder, just one day after she reported the matter to police.

The woman drummed up the courage to speak to Valletta police about the man on Wednesday. She told them that Admad Wakaa, a 39-year-old living in Birkirkara, had long been harassing and stalking her.

Mr Wakaa would turn up at the Valletta shop where the woman worked, tell her colleagues that she was his wife and follow her about all day.

He would sometimes go to a cafe opposite her workplace, seemingly following her every move.

Months into the torment, she finally decided to take action and report Mr Wakaa to police.

The suspect was arrested and arraigned for having harassed and stalked his victim, causing her to fear violence besides insulting or threatening her.

With the help of an interpreter and legal aid lawyer, Mr Wakaa pleaded guilty to all the charges and was remanded in custody by the court, presided over by magistrate Joseph Mifsud, pending the drawing up of a pre-sentencing report.

Inspectors Daryl Borg and Jeffrey Scicluna prosecuted. Lawyer Josette Sultana was legal aid counsel.
