A court this morning rejected a request for a psychological examination of a woman, Leanne Camilleri, whose false evidence in court led to her father being wrongly jailed for sexually molesting her.

Ms Camilleri had admitted perjury and is awaiting sentence.

Her father Emanuel Camilleri  was released from prison by order of the Constitutional Court after having served 400 days behind bars.

The request for a psychological examination of Leanne Camilleri was made by lawyer Martin Fenech, who appeared parte civile and is representing Leanne's mother, who in proceedings is also facing perjury charges but is pleading not guilty.

Quoting from the magisterial inquiry that she need psychological help, Dr Fenech said he was not convinced by her admission of guilt. If she admitted to something that happened in 2004, she was not criminally liable as she was under age.

Lawyer Maxilene Pace representing Leanne Camilleri, disagreed that her client needed to be psychologically examined, saying she was a victim of circumstances and undue pressure.

Furthermore, Dr Pace said, not everyone who needed psychological help was unfit to stand trial. This was a young woman who needed to close this chapter in her life so she could start living again.

Police inspector Sandro Camilleri said that her lies were repeated and she was exploited from a young age.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke in a decree ruled that the request for the psychological examination was not justified and dismissed it.

At this point Leanne Camilleri confirmed her admission to the charges and the magistrate ordered a pre-sentencing report to be drawn up.
