A man who was serving time in jail was given a nasty surprise on being released when he found out that his girlfriend had gone on a spending spree with his debit card.

Mother of two Maria Fenech yesterday admitted to emptying Paul Spagnol's account of around €2,000 by using his card while he was in prison. Ms Fenech also admitted to forging his signature.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi conditionally discharged Ms Fenech for two years after taking into consideration that her police record was clean and that she admitted to the charges at an early stage of the proceedings.

Police Inspector Bernard Spiteri prosecuted.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Charmaine Cherrett appeared for Ms Fenech.
