A woman who repeatedly failed to sign the bail book since January, has had her bail revoked but been spared the forfeiture of a €6,500 bail bond.

Ukrainian-born Tetiana Ellul, 43, was arraigned in court on Monday afternoon and admitted that she had failed to abide by bail conditions imposed upon her by a court in May 2016 in a case concerning drug-related charges.

Her lawyer asked the court to avoid seizing the €1,500 bail deposit and €5,000 personal guarantee she had paid, and the prosecution did not object.

The offence Ms Ellul was charged with, the prosection said, was not “serious enough” to warrant forfeiture of the bond.

In view of these submissions, duty magistrate Astrid May Grima declared the accused guilty upon her own admission, revoked bail, remanded the accused in custody and further ordered her to pay a fine of €1,000.

However, the bail deposit and personal guarantee were not to be forfeited.

Inspector Frank Anthony Tabone prosecuted.
Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri were defence counsel.
