A woman was spat at and hit on the face with a full plastic Coca Cola bottle in a clash between rival political supporters late yesterday.

Carmen Micallef, 35, suffered a bruise around an eye and internal bruising.

She told timeofmalta.com how the incident happened at about 7pm in Ħamrun after the two political mass meetings.

After attending the PN meeting she went to Hamrun to pick up a pizza. With her in the car was her daughter and three other children.

On seeing a group of men holding PL flags walk past them, one of the children, an 11-year-old, said: “Jaqq Laburisti.”

The men heard her and one of them told Ms Micallef she was teaching the children the wrong things. She told him the girl was young and should not be taken too seriously.

One of the men spat in her face and insulted her. She admitted to insulting him back. She then got out of her car to pick up the pizza.

A man from the group said she should buy them all a pizza since she was a Nationalist and they were “Labourites dying of hunger.”

The man then snatched the €5 she was holding and tore it up. Another man hit her in the face with the full Coca Cola bottle.

She went to the Floriana health centre from where she was referred to Mater Dei Hospital. She also filed a police report at the Ħamrun police station.
