A 49-year-old woman was grievously injured last night after she suffered burns in a house fire in Senglea.

The police said her 84-year-old father was helped out of the residence in Triq San Pietru u San Pawl by members of the police Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU). He escaped uninjured.

The blaze, at around 9.45pm, was triggered by a burning mattress and the man was caught in the upper storey of the residence. Realising he could not get out, he went to the balcony and started shouting for help.

Neighbours tried to help until the RIU arrived and eventually got him out with the their help.

Although injured, the woman managed to get out of the house on her own.

The fire was eventually put out by members of the Civil Protection Department.
