DNA tests confirmed that the woman found dead in the Marsalforn Valley in Gozo on Sunday was the 71-year-old Danish tourist who had been reported missing on Friday.

Police are treating the death of the woman, whose naked body was found face down in a puddle, as “suspicious”, Assistant Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta said Monday.

The woman, who was holidaying in Malta for the first time, was reported missing by relatives on July 24 when she never returned from shopping. On Sunday afternoon, a man walking his dog came across the woman’s body.

An autopsy on Monday was inconclusive. Although it revealed that the woman had suffered a blow to the head, bruising to the chest and a broken rib, none of the injuries was deemed fatal and could be compatible with a fall.

Tests are ongoing to establish the cause and time of death. Police are still searching for the woman’s belongings.
