A woman from Hamrun was accused in court today of having falsely filed a police report about a local councillor having committed a robbery.

Rita Forace claimed in a report to the police three days ago that councillor Silvio Vella, an employee of the Office of the Prime Minister, had snatched her bag, containing her purse, and ran off with it.

Police Inspector Sarah Magri told the court this morning that the police had evidence to show that the accused was nowhere near where she claimed to be, and the crime did not actually happen.

Lawyer Patrick Valentino asked why his client was arraigned under arrest when she was 53 with no police record. He said this was done because of certain pressures, but this was not right.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli granted bail against a personal guarantee of €200.
