An 85-year-old Sliema woman was fighting for her life after the balcony of her house gave way underfoot and she fell into the street below yesterday. The police said the woman fell a height of one and a half storeys and ended up amid the broken masonry on the pavement.

The accident happened in Locker Street at about 10 a.m. An ambulance rushed Joan Leaver to Mater Dei Hospital where she was found to be suffering from life threatening injuries.

Magistrate Michael Mallia appointed a team of court experts to help in an inquiry.
