Shannon Leigh Williams, who is in custody on charges of stealing luggage from the airport, returned to court yesterday charged with injuring a prison warder on Saturday.

The 20-year-old from Portsmouth pleaded not guilty and also denied violently assaulting, resisting, threatening and disobeying the same prison guard and a colleague.

Neither warder was present in court yesterday.

Ms Williams was remanded in custody and Magistrate Ian Micallef told the young woman that things seemed to be getting complicated for her in Malta.

“I wish you luck, you need medical help,” he told her.

The accused requested to be transferred to another prison section, possibly the forensic unit. Her request was passed on to the director of prisons for consideration.

Inspector Spiridione Zammit prosecuted while Noel Bianco was defence lawyer.

In June, Ms Williams was charged with stealing a suitcase that belonged to a Maltese couple who had arrived on a Ryanair flight from Girona in Spain.

She had allegedly gained access to the baggage claim area at the airport after showing her passport to the soldier on duty and explained that she had lost her luggage when she arrived in Malta on a Ryanair flight in May.

A few days later she was spotted, by chance, by the couple in Xemxija, sporting a hand-bag and sneakers identical to the ones which were in the stolen luggage.
