A 22-year-old immigrant who lives in San Gwann was this afternoon remanded in custody after she pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of her husband Samuel Bangura.

Mr Bangura was stabbed and found bleeding profusely in Triq il-Barbagann, San Gwann. The incident was reported to the police early yesterday morning.

Sandra David, who, according to the charge sheet, was born in Nigeria or Sierra Leone, also pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring Mr Bangura.

Police Inspector Tony Cachia clarified that the woman had originally misled the Refugee Commissioner claiming she was from Sierra Leone but then admitted she was Nigerian to an official from the Sierra Leone High Commission.

Legal aid lawyer Noel Bartolo argued that his client was acting in self-defence so she should be granted bail. He claimed that Mr Bangura had tried to strangle her.

But Magistrate Miriam Hayman said she was denying Mrs David bail to give her husband time to give his statement.

Mr Bangura is in a critical condition.
