A woman was jailed for 15 months for stealing five cheques and making use of them a few weeks after she had been placed on probation for a similar crime.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke found Alexia Cross, 29, guilty of stealing the cheques from Raymond Avallone in May 2007 and forging his signature to make use of them.

She wrote a cheque for €233 addressed to Maypole Confectionary and cashed the rest of the cheques, amounting to a total of about €3,380, to the detriment of Mr Avallone and Bank of Valletta.

Magistrate Clarke heard that this happened barely a month after Ms Cross had been placed on probation for three years in another fraud case that took place in April 2007.

Ms Cross claimed she had paid back the money owed to the bank but this turned out to be false. The only money paid back amounted to €150 to Maypole.

Police Inspector Ian Abdilla prosecuted.
