A woman who is pleading not guilty to defrauding her former employer of €340,000 was this morning granted bail against a deposit of €5,000 and a personal guarantee of €10,000.
37-year-old Carmen Santonocito, a waitress who lives in Marsascala, was accused of defrauding BIM Ltd of €340,000 in June 2004.
Inspector Angelo Gafa told the court that Ms Santonocito was a senior accounts clerk with the company. She would not deposit the cash she received and on one occasion she allegedly took Lm120,000 to the bank to be deposited, but claimed she was held up and the money was never deposited.
LIBYAN PLEADS GUILTY TO THEFT
Osama L Mahdawi, a 19-year-old Libyan living in San Gwann is expected to be deported after pleading guilty to theft and using someone else’s ID card.
Mr Mahdawi was accused of stealing a mobile phone and a handbag from Brown’s nightclub in Paceville on April 5, stealing a wallet on March 26 and of using an ID card that was in that wallet on May 27. He was also accused of stealing towels from Garden View in Swieqi on the same day.
Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona gave him one month to refund €300 and handed down a two year jail term suspended for four.
IMMIGRANT PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO TRYING TO ESCAPE DETENTION
Hbib Mohammed Hamdi was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to trying to escape from the Ta’ Kandja detention centre on May 27.
