Dennis Wise is to leave his job as manager of Leeds United to work with Kevin Keegan at Newcastle United, the League One (third division) club said.

"We have agreed a compensation package with Newcastle United for the services Dennis Wise and he will part company with the club on Tuesday after completing the preparations for our game at Southend United that evening," the club said on their Web site www.leedsunited.com.

"We will always be grateful to Dennis for the way he has turned things around at the club on the playing side and he goes with our best wishes for the future."

Wise's arrival at St James' Park lessens the chance of a role for former striker Alan Shearer, who turned down the number two position last week.

Keegan, who returned to the club to replace Sam Allardyce earlier this month, already has Arthur Cox, Terry McDermott and Nigel Pearson as assistants.

Wise, a key member of the Wimbledon "Crazy Gang" who won the FA Cup in 1988, took over at Leeds from Kevin Blackwell in October 2006 but could not prevent the club being relegated to the third tier of English soccer for the first time.

However, he has won the fans over by guiding Leeds to fifth in the table despite starting with a 15-point deficit after they went into administration at the end of last season.

Last October, Wise's assistant Gus Poyet left Leeds to become Juande Ramos's number two at Tottenham Hotspur.
