Charlotte Wingfield set a new national 100m record today and placed second in her race at the European Athletics Team Championship Third League in Azerbaijan.

The 20-year-old sprinter clocked 11.69 seconds to improve her previous best mark of 11.79 seconds she clocked in Bedford last month.

Earlier this month, Wingfield had achieved a time of 11.71 seconds when winning the short sprint event at the Iceland GSSE. However, her time in Reykjavik was wind-assisted and didn’t count as a record.

Wingfield, who gained 13 points for Malta’s athletics squad thanks to her second placing, was beaten to the post by Olga Lenskay. The Israeli sprinter was home in 11.61 seconds. Lenka Krsakova, of Slovakia, was third in 11.76 seconds.

Fourteen nations are competing in the championship which is part of the European Games sports programme in Baku.
