Nightlife in the quaint maritime town of Vittoriosa has been livened up with the opening of a new wine bar in a centuries-old cellar.

The Del Borgo, which used to be the cellar of the Prince of Wales' Own band club along the main street leading into Vittoriosa from the land side, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi last Thursday. Source Creative were responsible for the interior design.

The name Del Borgo is a play on the word Birgu which is the name the Maltese use when referring to Vittoriosa. Alan Mercieca Bons and Ingrid Dalli are the owners. The cellar stocks over 100 wines with prices that vary from Lm3.75 to Lm200 for a fine red Gaja from the Piedmont region in Italy.

Patrons should also watch out for wine-tasting sessions and cooking demonstrations.

The food menu is kept simple. Among the items are ravioli with cheeselet-filling and fresh tomato sauce, Maltese platters and home-made ice-cream from Gozo, made according to an old recipe the maker inherited from his great-grandfather.

Del Borgo and its kitchen is open from 7.30 p.m. until morning.
