Next month, Roberto Martinez will begin his second season in charge at Wigan Athletic, delighted that he managed to steer the side away from demotion in his maiden campaign in the top flight.

Martinez, who succeeded Steve Bruce at Wigan, will be the only Spanish boss in the Premier League next season after Liverpool parted company with Rafael Benitez. The latter has since replaced Jose Mourinho as coach of Inter.

Mick McCarthy was in his first campaign at the helm of Wolves in the Premier League and he also did well to lead the club to survival in the top division.

Wolves finished 15th, a place above Wigan.

Both sides won nine matches but the Molineux outfit finished two points ahead of the Latics. Wigan's goal difference of (-42) was the worst of the division as Wolves' statistic was -24.

Wigan found the going tough in London as they lost all their five encounters and shipped in 26 goals. But the Latics also remember vividly the Premier League wins they had at home against West Ham, Chelsea and Arsenal.

When, at the end of the season, Martinez was asked to comment on the 9-1 drubbing his side suffered at Tottenham, he hit back by saying that he had done his best to keep Wigan in the Premier League.

Perhaps, the biggest mistake committed by McCarthy was when Wolves went to play Manchester United at Old Trafford as the Irish manager opted to field a side that had 10 changes from the previous match.

The manager was rebuked by the FA and received a suspended sentence for his action.

Striker Kevin Doyle, Wolves' record signing, was the team's best player of the 2009-10 season, finishing top scorer.

There was no joy in the domestic cups for Wigan. They were humiliated following a second round exit to Blackpool at home in the League Cup. In the FA Cup, after a home win over Hull, the Latics succumbed to League Two side Notts County at home (0-1 in a replay after a 2-2 draw).

Wolves also failed to set any bushes on fire.

In the League Cup, they bowed out in the third round (0-1 at Manchester United) and in the FA Cup, Championship side Crystal Palace beat them at Selhurst Park 1-3 in a fourth round replay.
