Updated 2.28 p.m.

A widespread power cut this afternoon was caused by a fault in the old part of the Delimara power station and had nothing to do with the power station extension which came on stream yesterday, Enemalta said.

The fault developed at 1.07 p.m. when Turbine Two tripped. The cause is being investigated.

The localities affected were Buġibba, Qawra, Burmarrad, Marsascala, Xagħjra, Żabbar, Marsaxlokk, Attard, Birkirkara, Msida, Mosta, Gozo, Mellieħa, Gżira, Mġarr, Gudja and Tarxien.

Power was restored to most localities by 1.30 p.m., the corporation said.

However power to Bugibba, Marsascala and Msierah has to be switched on manually. Supply is expected to be restored shortly, Enemalta said.
