Q: The shop I buy my bread from never diplays the cost of bread and I am sure I am charged a different amount each time I go and buy bread. What can I do about it?

A: The Price Indication Regulations require that all goods, including food, being offered for sale to consumers, should be clearly indicated with a price so that consumers are better informed and able to compare prices of various outlets.

Moreover, every price indicated shall be made and displayed in a manner which is unambiguous, easily identifiable and clearly legible.

The shop where you are buying bread from is clearly not observing these regulations. You can report this to the Enforcement Directorate within the Consumer and Competition Department by calling Freephone 8007 4400.

The Enforcement Directorate ensures that prices of products are clearly indicated by carrying out regular spot checks throughout Malta.

Non-adherence to these regulations amounts to an offence and if found guilty, shop owners are liable to pay a fine of not less than €116 and not more than €1,163.

In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, shop owners can also have their trade licence suspended for a week.

The trader is obliged to ensure that not only he but also his employees fully comply with these regulations.
