Recently I came across this black and white photo from circa 1963/4. This group of happy students sport the Hamrun Lyceum tie. Here we are enjoying our midday break in the playground.

The headmaster was Mr Glass, affectionately known as Ħġieġu. Deputy head was Mr Grima, a no-nonsense first lieutenant!

Some names from the photo spring to mind, others have escaped my memory. There were super clever Abela and Casha who by now, I would imagine, have reached dizzy heights; Carmel, mad on football, who probably manages the big side; eloquent Agius, who probably runs a media empire and streetwise Grima, the class jester always on the edge.

1 left the Lyceum prematurely in 1965 to join the Royal Navy and see the world. On one occasion we sailed into Malta on HMS Bulwark for a few days' rest. I was having a few beers down the gut with my mates and this well-built policeman kept looking at me.

My anxiety levels shot up as Mr Plod came up to me, pointed his finger and said: "I know you!" The police down the gut had a fearsome reputation and my mates cautioned me not to give him any lip. Next, a big grin split his face and he broke into Maltese: "Konna il-Liceo flimkien!" (We were at the Lyceum together!)

Mr Plod - I believe he hailed from Rabat - is the fellow at the back on the left.I would love to hear from anyone in the picture. My e-mail address is rozndee@hotmail.com
