Passive smoking is the major problem being addressed by an anti-smoking drive launched by the government.
Called Inħeles u Irbaħ (Free yourself and win), the campaign pushes for smoking to be cut down in places where smoke could be inhaled by people nearby, such as in bars, restaurants and outside.
A spokesman for the Health Ministry said that while smoking in restaurants had decreased, smoking in bars was still widespread, with people lighting up as long as no policemen were present.
In another initiative, smokers wishing to stop can join a support group to find assistance and solace in people in their situation. Such groups are facilitated by professionals.
Health Minister Joe Cassar said: "When a person tries to quit smoking and doesn't manage, it doesn't mean the person is a failure. It only means the person has a health problem and needs help".
