While bamboo may conjure up images of panda bears, because the shoots are their staple diet, it can also be turned into a feast for the eyes. And the same applies to straw and grass which in most countries are used as fodder.

The refined skill of Chinese craftsmen to employ these natural materials to make finely designed decorative objects and other items for daily use is being illustrated in an exhibition called Bamboo And Straw Weaves at the Museum of Archaeology in Republic Street, Valletta.

The Chinese have a strong belief in the close marriage between humans and nature. In fact, bamboo is known for its strength, signifying faithfulness and resilience. Being hollow, it also represents modesty. In winter, the plant stays green, hence the suggestion of a brave stand in the face of adversity.

Grass, on the other hand, means farewell and as such makes people recall friends and loved ones.

Gu Hongxing, director of the China Culture Centre in Valletta who succeeds outgoing director Zheng Hao, said that the history of bamboo weave goes back to 6,000 years BC.

“Bamboo and straw weaving is carried out by individual craftsmen as well as by commercial firms dealing in this sector.

“This craft is another facet of Chinese culture which we hope to bring to the notice of the Maltese who are interested in other old world traditions,” Mr Gu said.

The art of bamboo and straw weaving is making a comeback as Chinese consumers are becoming more aware of the need to conserve the environment and are opting for bamboo baskets in place of plastic bags.

The exhibition, organised by the China Culture Centre and Heritage Malta, runs until November 14. The Museum of Archaeology opens Monday to Sunday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Last entries at 6.30 p.m.
