Embark on a journey down the rocky hollows that form the bowels of the Maltese islands with the second volume of Underground Malta 360°.

The second feast of Malta's unique underground heritage, the publication, the ninth issue in the Miranda 360° Collection of magazines, is out with The Times tomorrow.

It celebrates the island's underground spirituality, heritage, culture and commerce in crypts, dungeons, shelters, mills, cellars, restaurants, even residences.

Researching and photographing the sites took months as most of them are not open to the public and several were photographed for the first time.

The better known underground sites are also presented. Valletta shows the ingeniousness of the Knights of the Order of St John with underground spaces that first provided the stone for construction and were then put to good use in a fortified city. Many of the sites were only discovered over the last few decades.

Had it not been for a slip of the tongue of one of the workers then, the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum would be still unknown to date. Who knows how many other sites are yet undiscovered!

The Miranda 360° Collection is printed by Progress Press, a member of the Allied Group. As customary, tomorrow's issue will be printed on Forest Stewardship Council certified paper. FSC is an international, non-profit organisation promoting the responsible management of the world's forests.

The price of tomorrow's issue of The Times will increase from 60c to €1.
