Maria Anthea Attard, Bachelor of Commerce, first year.

I always try to follow a balanced diet wherever I am, especially at University. When I start lectures early in the morning, I usually take a packed lunch with me. However, since I sometimes finish lectures at 7 p.m., it is somewhat difficult to take enough ‘healthy’ food that would still be edible by the end of the day.

For this reason, food from the canteen or from vending machines found on campus always proves to be an easy alternative.

The canteen and restaurants just outside the University gates are an extra temptation to us students as we tend to easily fall for their tastier, less healthy food.

Although healthy eating is encouraged at the canteen by having options such as fruit, juices and smoothies, I still find myself falling for the less healthy choices from the pastry counter. If there were a better selection of fruit, yoghurts, dairy products and other healthy food at the canteen I would probably choose these items.

At the end of the day, it always comes down to having some self-discipline.

Colette Galea, B. Pharmacy, fourth year.

I’m always late in the morning so my breakfast usually consists of a glass of fruit juice and a banana on my way to University. Then, at around 10 a.m. I have a small bag of cereal.

I get hungry quite often so I also have an apple at around 11 a.m.

If I have a long day at university, I have my lunch there, which I would have prepared at home. This would normally consist of two slices of brown bread, a slice of cheese and turkey ham.

These are my healthier days because, of course, I do get tempted by all the chocolate and junk food available in and around campus. However, I do try to stay away most of the time.
