Malta offers to host EU Asylum Agency

Malta has formally declared its interest in hosting the EU’s Asylum Agency, which will be set up next year with a brief to coordinate the asylum policy.

Addressing the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Brussels yesterday, Justice Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici said that Malta welcomed the Commission’s proposal to have the agency and expressed the island’s interest in hosting it.

However, he stressed that the agency’s seat is not the most important aspect for Malta.

Murder suspect cancels overseas business trip

The man charged with the murder of his business partner has decided not to make an overseas business trip despite being granted permission to do so by the courts.

Spiridione Mercieca was allowed to travel to “Western Africa”on a 60-day trip in connection with a contract that bound the company he shared with the victim.

Speaking to The Times yesterday, Mr Mercieca said he would not be travelling and this to avoid a “situation where negative impressions are unjustly given about his actions and the judiciary”.

EU opens ‘new opportunities’ for Maltese youth, PM says

Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami yesterday stressed the need to further debate on the European Union and to ensure that it does not divide along party lines.

He said that as a national, non-governmental autonomous organisation, the National Youth Council has a mission in this respect.

Dr Fenech Adami was addressing a seminar organised by the National Youth Council on “Maltese Youth and the European Union” at the Preluna Hotel.

The seminar was based on a survey among young people, which found that 91 per cent would make their own decision on whether to support EU membership, and not necessarily follow their party’s lead.

“After all, young people are the greatest possible beneficiaries of membership of the EU,” he said.

He said membership projects Malta into a secure future politically and economically, making it part of one of the largest democracies and economies of the world.

Investment, employment and job opportunities are enhanced by an inherent stability which accompanies membership in a system of solidarity for all the Union members, he added.

Strike at Marsa firm extended again

The Metal Workers Section of the General Workers’ Union yesterday extended the strike of employees of John Bezzina and Sons Ltd, of Marsa, until next Monday. The strike, originally called for one day in protest at the discharge of 22 workers, was first extended until yesterday.

Section officials told employees at a meeting yesterday that further steps would be taken if the dispute is not settled until Monday. The section has told the MPBW not to undertake work for the first on a contract which it had secured from the services.

No discussions have so far been held between the section and the management of the firm since the employees walked out on strike on Monday. The section claims the employees were discharged because they had joined the union. The management contends they had given notices to the employees because of the decreasing volume of work.

Safe opened

Members of the CID yesterday morning opened the safe found in a well at Ħal Muli on Tuesday. This was at an inquest held at the Magistrates Courts. The safe, which was in a rotting wooden box and still padlocked, was recovered by the Police from a well in a field belonging to Manuel Attard of Żebbuġ.
