IVF law being drafted

A law regulating IVF and biotechnology is being drafted but no deadline has yet been set for its presentation in Parliament. The Ministry for  Justice and Home Affairs would only say that the law will “eventually” be presented in the House of Representatives.

The news comes in the wake of a report in The Sunday Times on January 18 that Mater Dei Hospital has a fully-equipped IVF laboratory, which is not being used. As yet, expensive IVF treatment for infertile couples is not offered on the national health service.

Fuel oil price drops 39%

The price of fuel oil used by Enemalta for its power plants has dropped 39 per cent since October, when the new energy bills were introduced, according to a leading energy information provider.

The drop in the oil price has not been reflected in consumer bills, even though the new tariffs had to be revised when the price of oil fluctuated by more than 15 per cent.

Still, the Ministry for Infrastructure yesterday denied there was a 15 per cent fluctuation from the benchmark price used by Enemalta to calculate the tariffs but stopped short of saying by how much had the price of oil fluctuated.

Author Nicholas Monsarrat settling in Gozo

To live in a quiet place, away from the shuttling of trains, the horns of cars and the daily grime of industry, is the ideal of renowned author Nicholas Monsarrat. He thinks he has found this in a house that is being built in St Lawrence, Gozo, where he feels certain he will now settle for good, to tackle enough writing commissions that will keep him busy for at least the next 10 years.

For Monsarrat, Malta is like a dream come true, he said yesterday while at the Calypso Hotel in Marsalforn: “One of my future works should feature Malta. I shall not write it within the next three or four years till I become really acquainted with the island. I have not yet decided when to start writing it but I must include happenings associated with the Second World War.”
