Man ‘shot at ceiling’ during argument

A nine-hour argument between a young couple climaxed when the man allegedly shot at a restaurant ceiling in a rage, causing his girlfriend to run out into the street.

Carl Bonnici, 30, was in the “living quarters” of his restaurant, the Morning Star in St Thomas Bay, with his girlfriend, Millicent Zammit, when an all-day argument suddenly blew up and Mr Bonnici fired his Browning shot gun at the ceiling on Thursday at 6pm, a court heard yesterday.

Developers warned over Ramla appeal

The developers of the proposed Ramla l-Ħamra tourist complex were yesterday given an ultimatum to pay their pending fee by May or lose their appeal.

The warning was given during an appeals board sitting in Gozo. The board warned the developers that their appeal would fall through unless they paid up. In July 2007, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority had granted a permit for the development of Ulysses Lodge, overlooking Ramla l-Ħamra, into a 23-unit villa complex.

Man dies in head-on crash

A middle-aged man died and an elderly couple were seriously injured in a head-on crash in Qormi yesterday afternoon.

Mr Joe Fenech of Qormi, was driving down Manoel Dimech Street when his red Fiat was involved in a crash with a blue Mazda coming in the opposite direction.

He died on the spot.

High time to review role of Public Service Commission – MSU chief

The man who has been spearheading the government’s reform efforts in the civil service for the last three years says it is high time to review the role of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

“It is a fundamental change that is needed and I attach a lot of importance to it,” said Mr Joseph V. Tabone, chairman of the government-owned, in-house consultancy firm Management Systems Unit.

The Constitution empowers the Prime Minister to make appointments to public offices, to remove appointees and exercise disciplinary control on the recommendation of the PSC.

Film project announced: first phase going ahead

Malta will become a major film and television production base, according to development plans announced by Interservice Mediterranean Limited.

The company was launched yesterday during simultaneous press conferences at the Corinthia Palace Hotel, Attard, and at the Waldorf Hotel, London.

The initial development is in three phases, spread out over five years. By phase two, the company claims it will employ over 200 Maltese personnel in different categories of jobs. The three phases are expected to be completed in three years’ time, according to plans.

Pietà crash

Joseph Scerri, of Msida, the driver of a karozzin, who was thrown to the ground when his cab was hit by a car in Pietà late on Wednesday night, was detained at St Luke’s Hospital with slight injuries as was Joseph Schembri, of Valletta, the driver of the car.

Another car was involved in the crash, in which the horse was so severely injured that it was destroyed on the spot.
