Vella Bonnici makes huge gains in race for top post

Joe Vella Bonnici has made huge gains in a tight race for Labour general secretary over the past week after senior Labour figures made a concerted effort to prevent Jason Micallef’s re-election.

Former deputy leader Michael Falzon is the latest heavyweight to publicly urge delegates not to vote for Mr Micallef – he sent a seven-page e-mail heavily criticising the general secretary in recent days – following respected MP Leo Brincat’s scathing letter to The Sunday Times last week.

Sicilian fishermen ‘not involved’ in boat tragedy

Sicilian fishermen were not involved in the boating tragedy which left three men dead and a boy missing, according to Fisheries Cooperative president Ray Bugeja, but he confirmed that a heated argument had taken place in mid-June.

Mr Bugeja said the owners of the Simshar had a heated exchange with Sicilian purse seiners, but he had heard nothing to suggest that 61-year-old Carmelo Bugeja had fired shots.

Agreement offers ‘new beginning’ to doctors 

An agreement which provides new salary grades and work conditions for health sector doctors was initialled yesterday by the government and the Medical Association of Malta.

The agreement was described as a “new beginning and a total change for doctors” by the association’s president, Joseph Pace.

He said: “The much needed major surgery seems to have finally started.”

Supporting the agreement, Home Affairs and Social Development Minister Louis Galea said he considered the agreement as a new chapter in the history of the health sector.

Man critical after axe attack

A man from Rabat is fighting for his life after he was attacked with an axe yesterday afternoon. He received head injuries.

Paul Galea, 35, was gravely injured in the attack, which occurred at Wied il-Bużbież at around 4.30pm. Five years ago, Mr Galea was shot during a family dispute, a police spokesman said yesterday.

Police believe the axing may also be the result of another family quarrel. Magistrate Dr Carmelo Farrugia Sacco held an on-site inquiry.

Maltese singer ‘mobbed’ in Athens

Vocalist Enzo Guzman, of Sliema, who represented Malta in the Olympiad of Song, the first international song festival to be held in Athens, returned yesterday.

Guzman was one of the most popular singers at the festival.

His tenth placing in the finals in no way reflected the opinion of the vast audience at the imposing Athens stadium.

J. B. Cassar’s tune L’amore è eterno was so popular that the 70,000 who packed the stadium encored the song three times and Guzman received a tremedous ovation.

Music Hall artistes go a-wandering

A number of karozzini took artistes appearing at the Victorian Music Hall at Bir id-Deheb on an afternoon’s outing to Gżira, Sliema and Valletta yesterday.

In the cabs were Lesley Duff, Laura Grahame, Judy Russell and Sandy Grant.

Also aboard were Ronald Scott-Dodd, director of Malta Music Halls Ltd, and Alan Thompson, his assistant.
