Water production set to increase by 5.5m gallons a day by summer

Water production in Malta is set to increase by 5.5 million gallons a day to 36 million gallons a day by the summer, Water and Energy Parliamentary Secretary Ninu Zammit said.

The increase should provide the islands with a spare water production capacity that could be used when there are breakdowns in the production system.

It will be the first time that Malta will have had spare capacity, said Mr Zammit.

Consumption today is about 30 million gallons a day but Mr Zammit said it ws not yet possible to quantify how much the extra capacity would be in summer.

One reason is the Qrendi south pipeline project, now well under way and which is set to improve the water distribution system to the south of Malta and consequently raise consumption.

Last summer, demand for water had exceeded supply, prompting the government to increase water production at the Pembroke reverse osmosis plant by 1.8 million gallons a day in August and to plan another 5.5 million gallon increase by this summer.
