Steep rise in price of gas

A normal 12-kilo gas cylinder is €2 more expensive as of today, representing a price hike of 37 per cent. Enemalta yesterday announced substantially higher prices for all its gas products, with increases, approved by the Malta Resources Authority, ranging between 30 and 37 per cent. The government said the new prices did not recover the full cost of the product and it would be subsidising the difference to the tune of €150,000 per month.

The authority had actually approved increases that were almost double the price, which would have covered the full cost to buy and bottle the gas. However, the government has decided to continue subsidising gas for the time being and postponed such higher prices.

In October, during the parliamentary debate on a motion to transfer land in Bengħisa to Gasco Energy Ltd for the building of an LPG gas plant, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech had said that the price of gas would eventually go up to reflect the market price.

The corporation said it based its workings on the forward price of liquid petroleum gas (LPG), Enemalta’s cost base for its gas division and the expected sales for 2009.

Exhibition of Girolamo Gianni works in Valletta

One of the most impressive art exhibitions of recent Maltese history opens at the Auberge de Provence in Republic Street, Valletta, on Monday.

It is a show of 140 paintings by Girolamo Gianni, the 19th century Neapolitan artist who lived in Malta for 20 years. The paintings are on loan from 50 Maltese private collections.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Bank of Valletta, has been organised by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, which was set up in 1992 under the umbrella of the arts ministry, to promote an interest in Malta’s cultural, historic and artistic heritage. The exhibition closes at the end of April.

Luqa Airport back in full operation

Luqa Airport – its civil and Royal Air Force sides – is once again its busy, bustling self. Its main runway, taxiways and hardstandings given a 10-year lease of life at a cost of £500,000 to the British Air Ministry when all the works are finished.

Closed on January 15, it was actually due to reopen today. The MPBW, however, managed to complete the work three days ahead of schedule in good time to allow the major airlines using Luqa – British European Airways and Alitalia – not only to introduce new summer schedules and extra flights over the Easter period but to start using new types of aircraft, the Tridant II by BEA and the Caravelle by Alitalia.

Successful year for Malta hiking association

Last year proved to be quite a successful year for the Malta Hiking and Camping Association. The main activities were full-day hikes, half-day outings and weekend campings.

Except in the summer months when it was too hot, a hike was held monthly. The attendance of these hikes averaged 40 persons and sometimes exceeded 60.
