The legal adviser provides free information about matters of EU law, in particular relating to the rights of individual citizens, and can provide assistance when citizens have problems with the national authorities of the member states. The legal adviser is not meant to be a substitute for your own lawyer, but can give information on all questions pertaining to Europe. The service cannot provide advice on issues coming under purely national law or international private law, such as transnational marriages and divorces, private insurance, inheritance law, disputes with neighbours, etc.

It does not deal with issues pertaining to law enforcement, the procedure at the Maltese Courts or Mepa.

The free legal advice could be on the following issues in particular: right of residence in other EU member states; social security (unemployment, sickness insurance, pensions, family benefits); recognition of vocational and academic qualifications, free movement in general (e.g. changing place of residence within the EU); judgments of the European Court of Justice.

This list is not exhaustive. The information or advice given is a professional independent advice and does not represent those of the European Commission which is not bound by said information/advice.
