Q: My wife and I purchased a microwave oven as part of a package of appliances that also included an electric oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher and a washing machine. The microwave oven resulted faulty and after a number of repairs the seller agreed to give us a cash refund.

Since the appliances were purchased as a package, with an overall discount of 25 per cent on the original price, what is the amount of money we are entitled to?

A: By law, the amount of money you are entitled to is the amount you paid for the microwave oven. In these situations one should calculate the original cost of the microwave oven, minus the discount.

Furthermore, once a cash refund is given, the trader is legally entitled to keep the defective appliance.
