A total of 77.4 mm of rain fell last month at Luqa Airport, well over the September climatological norm of 40.4 mm.

The Meteorological Office said that highest amount of rainfall was registered on the 23rd with a total of 56.2 mm.

But the wettest September on record was that of 1997 when 266.9 mm of rain fell and the driest that of 1943 when there had been no rain at all.

Thunderstorms were noted on the 10th, 24th and 25th. The stormiest September in 1955 followed by that of 2003.

With a mean air temperature of 24.6 degrees Celcius, September days were half a degree warmer than the norm for September.

The lowest minimum temperature last month was 17.5 degrees Celcius, recorded on the 24th - 4.3 degrees higher than the minimum for the past 61 years.

Records at the Meteorological Office show that the coolest September night was on the 21st in 1969, when the minimum reading was 13.2 degrees.

The highest maximum temperature of 32.4 degrees, recorded on September 5, was five degrees lower than the maximum for the past 61 years. The hottest September days on record were the 9th and 10th of 1924, when a maximum temperature of 38.9°C was reached.
