The Marsascala, Xgħajra and Żabbar local councils have welcomed the announcement of a national park at Żonqor Point.

The government launched a public consultation exercise about the park on Monday and proposed to expand the area of the park by 44,000 square metres.

In a joint statement, the local councils said they have been pressuring the authorities for years to rehabilitate the area and take action against illegal dumping.

Initiatives such as the national park were needed in order to give residents in the area a place to enjoy the outdoors, the councils said.
