Despite having been host to one of the worst storms in recent years last October, 2010 will end with fine weather, allowing the numerous outdoor parties to take place.

According to the Meteorological Office, today’s highest temperature will be 17˚C, while 2011 will be greeted by Maltese revellers wearing their coats as the mercury goes down to 12˚C at night.

The same blue skies that beamed upon the organisers – who were yesterday setting up the canopies in St George’s Square in preparation for tonight’s free New Year’s Eve celebrations in the capital city – should make up most of today.

Umbrellas, however, should not be necessary, save for a few stray drops of champagne, much to the relief of those who had planned to go to one of the free outdoor parties being organised.

The year 2011 should be off to a good, albeit fresh start, as the temperature reaches a maximum of 16˚C, dipping to 10 degrees at night. The fair weather is expected to be short-lived, however, and the umbrella brigade is expected to return on Sunday, when rain is being forecast.
