The media, for the umpteenth time, has reported the rampant local problem of obesity. This has become the norm. Some cosmetic governmental activity attempts to give the impression that there is a concerted effort to tackle the local obesity crisis. The reality is quite the opposite.

Public relations events do not solve a problem that requires a massive input, not only from the authorities but from all the stakeholders involved. All of us have to shoulder our responsibilities if we ever want to see a solution.

After all, the health implications of obesity are massive but unfortunately the vast majority are long term and maybe not seen as a priority by many who view life in five-year cycles notwithstanding placing obesity as a priority action in Malta's Strategy for Sustainable Development.

The inter-sectoral committee, tasked with tackling this epidemic, has had over three years to come up with their still pending recommendations. Not an inspiring fact. From interviews and public statements given it is obvious that the Minister for Health and the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate have this issue close to their hearts.

Hopefully they will be given realistic means to start implementing lifelong changes among the Maltese population.
