Q: A few days ago, my water heater sprang a leak. Luckily, at the time, we were at home and could control the problem. This water heater was purchased on February 2, 2005, with a five-year guarantee against the inner tank leaking. So it is still under guarantee. It will have to be replaced. What is the situation regarding the new one and subsequent guarantee?

A: Since the water heater is still covered by the commercial guarantee, and the defect is covered by it, then it must be replaced by the supplier.

With regards to the new water heater, it won't have a new five-year guarantee, even though it is new, because it has been replaced under guarantee. A new guarantee is only given with a new purchase.

Therefore, when your water heater is replaced, it will only be guaranteed until February 2, 2010, unless obviously the trader decides to extend it. But that is up to him.
