March 22 marks World Water Day. In 1992, the UN designated this day to draw international attention to the one billion people worldwide without access to clean water.

In anticipation of Sunday's observance, SOS Malta together with Claudette Pace, yesterday launched its Water For Life fund-raising campaign at Heat, Valletta Waterfront.

This initiative forms part of the programme Promoting Development in Europe: Towards a Critical Mass and Beyond of Minority Rights Group International, funded by the EU.

Water For Life is aimed at making the public aware about the implications of the lack of water supply and sanitation, especially in developing countries. The project seeks to raise awareness about the problems related to the shortage of water, which are sometimes denied, and in so doing, engage the public in the fight against poverty.

A few years ago, Claudette Pace had also supported the Bread For Life programme for which many Maltese people had donated Lm1 each.

SOS Malta has set up an SMS facility for the public to make donations towards the Water For Life initiative: SMS 5061 7374 for a donation of €2.10 and SMS 50618076 for a donation of €4.19.
